Orbit and selection button positioning

Hello im new to umake but yet i have a feature request already. I noticed that the orbit and selection buttons can be me moved from right bottom to left bottom..which is great. But find that the positioning of the buttons to be a bit inconvenient when ipad is held with one hand at an angle ...lets say while sitting on chair or kicking back on a couch with the ipad resting on the legs and one hand holding it up in a desired angle . When i pad is held from one side.. The natural position of the thumb is not the lower portion of the screen ... Its somwhere above the mid point. Allowing us to move the selection and orbit icons up on the left or right side would greatly improve ergonomics as one wont need to move their hand or adjust their grip to reach these bottons at the bottom of the screen. With buttons higher ..All one has to do is just lower the thumb down on the screen someweher above halfway point where it naturally wants to land. If you allow maybe several vertical postions for these buttons... It will allow for much better customization to ones prefered way of working and much smoother/quicker interactivity . Would love to hear what you think about this idea. Thank you Ara

HI Ara,

So this has been the second time in 2 days where I have seen a request to move the orbit button to the upper corners. At first I was a bit surprised but I then remembered a design teacher of mine saying cell phones were designed upside down, and when you flip the number pad on a cell phone to the top, all of a sudden the phone felt right. So I got on my couch, and sure enough, there is logic behind moving the orbit functionality up to the top corner.

We have a mindset of thinking and rethinking everything, and always looking at new ways to make the uMake experience better, and so I think this is one that will work its way into uMake as we evolve the interface with time.

I personally believe some functions such as undo/redo, the lasso button and a quick snap/shift button should surround the orbit button so that the thumb can quickly and easily access some functions that are often used.

We have brought several user requested features to uMake and continue to do so as we update the app on average every 2 weeks, so rest assured, we will definitely investigate how we can make the orbit button positioning work well.

Thanks very much for the request. Looking forward to working on it in the near future.

Thank you Nyko. When you start implementing this idea... Could you kindly consider allowing for several position along the vertical edge, and not just top or button. Depending on the grip postion.. The convenient location may very from person to person. But if you allow, lets say... Lower corrner, just below mid point, above midpoint and top corrner it will accomodate different grips better.....(or better yet allow any postion if possible) I love the orbital idea (other functions surrounding the orbit button ). Very cool ..!!.. If scaling and spacing between buttons is carefully thought out .. better yet if they are adjustable. :) Looking forward to learning more and seeing future upgrades . Very cool software! Ps. may i ask where your funding comes from ?
Nyko... If i may suggest.. Check out Procreate app. .. They have a similar implementation of my suggestion. They use it for brush opacity and size adjustment sliders One can slide these buttons up or down along the vertical edge to Any Postion they desire.. Very convenient. Cheers Ara

HI Ara,

We will see what we can do in terms of positioning. We are definitely taking all feedback seriously and excited to evolve our interface. We have some standards we'd like to maintain and one of them is to try and keep the interface as intuitive and easy to understand as possible, but we are always excited and happy to try new things. I'll let you know but we have a few other features to complete before we being re-addressing the interface...

Our current Series A round was led by BlueRun Ventures and we have a few really great investors as well. I think the TechCrunch article covers our most recent funding quite well: http://techcrunch.com/2015/12/03/3d-design-app-umake-raises-5m-to-take-on-autodesk-and-others/

Thanks again for the kind words and sharing your feedback/ insists with us!

Good luck Nyko! You have a good thing going here and great backers. I have been inoveled with 3d since mid 80s...amiga , pc and silicon graphics days.. More intensely so right when 3dstudio was released. I remember all the correspondence with Garry Yost through Compuserve.. Lol. Not in actual programing area but feature and ui design.. Quite exciting times... Loved it ... I still love 3d but have grown a bit lazy.. Just want to be able to pull off what i could do 20-25 years ago on a 386 pc on my ipadpro,....more spontaneously while i kick back on my couch/chair etc...:) Some featurs are amazing on tablets ...Seems we are getting there but still have quite a ways to go to have a full comprehensive 3d modeling, animation, rendering setup on a tablet... But looking forward to that day. As i learn uMake more.. Ill try to share my thoughts with you. Thank you. Ara

Ara,

Thanks for the kind words and also the recommendations. It's great to have people who have been involved with 3D in the past checking out uMake and sending us feedback. We love that! I will tell you that when I used uMake for the first time, I was amazed and my brain was overwhelmed with the possibilities for the future of uMake. There is a lot we can and will do, but we are very aware and excited about the journey that lies ahead to get to where you are suggesting with a comprehensive tool for creating ideas in 3D and being able to render them. We still want to try and enable anyone to be able to use uMake and create in 3D, so we have an additional challenge of creating a hyper user friendly interface, but with people like yourself and others willing to give feedback and suggestions, we will get there together. We are very excited for the day when you can sketch something in uMake, create a quick render of it on the iPad, send it over to a 3D printer, print it, and then present it, all in a matter of a couple of hours. The future for 3D is quite bright :) Please keep sharing your thoughts to help us shape ours. Cheers.
